This is a Inutsuge branch that has come out of the rhythm of a young family who has started living in the village and is gradually taking care of the garden. They are my studio neighbors and my miso-making teacher. The base is made of Japanese cedar grown in the mountains surrounding the village.

これは集落に若い家族が暮らし始め、少しづつ庭の手入れを進める彼らのリズムで出てきたイヌツゲの枝です。彼らは私のスタジオのご近所さんであり、味噌づくりの先生でもあります。土台に使用しているのは集落を取り囲む山々で育てられている杉。

This branch that I received as a miso-making student was very hard and covered with thick bark. When I carefully removed the bark all the way to the tip of the branch, I found countless traces of where the branch had broken. As the branch was slowly dried, the miso fermented and was deliciously completed. Looking back at the time-consuming production process, it feels like everything has its own rhythm. The time it takes for the miso to ferment, the time it takes for the branches to dry, the time it takes for the cedar to grow and be turned into lumber. Each requires a different amount of time, and if I rush through the repetition of these steps, I’ll run into trouble.

味噌づくりの生徒として伺った際に頂いたこの枝はとても硬く、分厚い樹皮に覆われていました。細かく分かれた枝先まで丁寧に樹皮を取り除いてゆくと、枝が折れた痕跡が無数に出てきました。この枝をゆっくりと乾燥させる途中で、味噌は発酵が進んでおいしく完成。時間のかかる制作過程を振り返ってみても、物事にはそれぞれのリズムがあるように感じます。味噌が発酵するための時間、枝が乾燥するのに必要な時間、杉が育って材木にできるまでにかかる時間。それぞれ必要な時間が違っていて、その繰り返しを急ぎすぎると困ったことになります。

The scenery changes with a cyclical rhythm. If the rhythm of a town's changes is too fast, it can be lonely, and if the rhythm of a town's changes is too slow, it can lead to decline. I think that before balance, I should focus on rhythm. If striving to understand rhythm and reconsidering balance leads to something beautiful, then it seems that harmony is what lies ahead. This is not a conclusion but a hypothesis. I am ruminating and verifying it as I create it.

風景も周期的なリズムで変化します。街の風景が変化するリズムは速すぎると寂しく感じるけれど、街が変化していくリズムが遅すぎると衰退してしまうこともあります。バランスは重要なことですが、その前にリズムを理解しようとすることが大切なのかもしれないと思っています。個のリズムを理解しようと努め、関係のバランスを見つめ直すことで美しいものが生まれるのなら、その先には調和があるように思えます。これは結論などではなく仮定です。作りながら反芻し、検証しています。
