The Irumagawa River flows near the studio. It descends the mountain and joins the Arakawa River, irrigating the Kanto Plain before heading out to Tokyo Bay. Once it leaves Tokyo Bay, it can travel the world by connecting with ocean currents. The upper reaches of the Irumagawa River are known as the Naguri River, and the valley is filled with the scenery of fireflies dancing. Many lilies grow wild around my studio. As far as I can tell, there are four types of lily. Towards the end of summer, the flowers bloom one after another, becoming an element of the scenery that heralds the change of seasons. The area where my studio is located has a rhythm of small and large circulations. The village where the studio is located is surrounded by mountains where trees are grown for forestry. Trees grown over several decades are milled into lumber in this city. And the saplings are grown on the outskirts of the nearest city. There is a cycle within a very small area, where a sapling sprouts in the city, grows large on the mountain that can be seen there, and is cut down to become a wooden house in the city. There is a cycle within a very small area, where a sapling sprouts in the city, grows large on the mountain that can be seen there, and is cut down to become a wooden house in the city. This is a Inutsuge branch that has come out of the rhythm of a young family who has started living in the village and is gradually taking care of the garden. They are my studio neighbors and my miso-making teacher. The base is made of Japanese cedar grown in the mountains surrounding the village. これは集落に若い家族が暮らし始め、少しづつ庭の手入れを進める彼らのリズムで出てきたイヌツゲの枝です。彼らは私のスタジオのご近所さんであり、味噌づくりの先生でもあります。土台に使用しているのは集落を取り囲む山々で育てられている杉。 This branch that I received as a miso-making student was very hard and covered with thick bark. When I carefully removed the bark all the way to the tip of the branch, I found countless traces of where the branch had broken. As the branch was slowly dried, the miso fermented and was deliciously completed. Looking back at the time-consuming production process, it feels like everything has its own rhythm. The time it takes for the miso to ferment, the time it takes for the branches to dry, the time it takes for the cedar to grow and be turned into lumber.
