In the mountainous area near Tokyo where my studio is located, villages are dotted along the river that runs through the valley. Our scenery is created by interweaving the trees grown in the mountains for forestry purposes, the garden trees of the villages, and the native plants along the river. 私のスタジオがある東京近郊の中山間地では、谷を流れる川に沿って集落が点在しています。山で林業として育てられる樹木を中心に、集落の庭木と川沿いの自生の植物が織り重なるようにして風景をつくり出しています。 ーーー I have kept this small *Kobushi* (Japanese magnolia) twig with me for quite a long time. In the interim, I learned the term *nōgenboku*—a word referring to plants that served as indicators for the timing of agricultural tasks. This *Kobushi* is one such plant, signaling the time for rice planting. これはずいぶん長いこと手元に置いていたコブシの小枝。 その間に私は農諺木（のうげんぼく）という言葉を知りました。農諺木というのは農作業のタイミングを知る目安にしていた植物を指すのだそうです。このコブシは田植えの時期を知らせる農諺木。 The rhythm of the annual rice planting and the rhythm of the *kobushi* (magnolia) blooming once a year are one and the same. Hiyodori perched on a Keyaki tree. The hamlet stretches along the stream in the valley, with large zelkova trees lining the banks. Hiyodori, eager to enjoy the flavors of the season, perch atop these towering trees—which offer a sweeping view of the surroundings—and are likely scouting out the next ripe treats. Autumn is the season of harvest; perhaps they are checking to see if the pollen they transported while feeding on nectar has indeed resulted in the fruit. 谷の川に沿って集落は続き、岸には大きな欅が連なります。季節の味覚を楽しむヒヨドリは、遠くまで見通せる大きな欅にとまり、きっと次の食べ頃を見ているのです。秋は実りの秋。自分たちが花の蜜を食べるついでに運んだ花粉が、実りにつながっているのかどうか。確認しているのかもしれません。 - - - When the season comes, many small birds eat nuts from trees and scatter seeds, and by giving them nuts, trees transport the seeds to distant locations. In the area surrounding my studio, cedar are grown for lumber. Many wisteria trees grow naturally on that mountain. Wisteria can also be seen along local riversides and villages. スタジオ周辺の地域では、材木を得るために杉や檜が育てられています。その山には多くの藤が自生しており、地域の川辺や集落でも見ることができます。 The mountain wisteria, which has a rhythm of blooming around May, is an element of the scenery that gently connects the valley village and the riverside, and the riverside and the foot of the mountain as forestry area. This is a twig of the Akashide, characterized by its red winter buds. This deciduous tree grows in various places close to human settlements, such as along the edges of forests and riverbanks. It is said that even after the advent of fossil fuels, it continued to be used as firewood for local communities for quite some time. これは赤い冬芽を持つ赤四手の小枝。 山の外縁や川岸など、暮らしに近い色々なところに育っているこの落葉樹。化石燃料が登場してからもしばらくの間は集落の薪燃料として使われてきたそうです。 Upon looking into it, I came across information about how the mountain used to be divided into four sections for use. It seems the forest resources were utilized by rotating through these four zones on a cycle of roughly twenty years. Thinking back, there are indeed a few spots where good Akashide branches lie on the ground, and I realize I tend to circle around those same areas. Perhaps if I understood the rhythm, I could make even greater use of what the forest offers. 調べてみると、山を４つの区画に分けて利用していた昔の話が出てきました。約20年のサイクルで４つの区画に分けた森林資源を使うのだそうです。思い返して見ると、良いアカシデの枝が落ちている場所はいくつかあって、私もそこをぐるぐる回っているような気もします。リズムを知れば、私はより多くの事を利用できるのかも知れません。 The structural timber is Japanese cedar grown in the mountains surrounding this hamlet; cultivated over a longer cycle than the Akashide, it has been used for everything from local buildings to the city of Edo in times past. The stones are river pebbles, slowly polished by the valley stream. They are limestone—a material characteristic of this area, which lies downstream from Mount Buko, a source of lime extraction. Historical records indicate that this region, rich in both limestone and fuel, also produced the slaked lime used to make the plaster supplied to Edo. 土台の木材はこの集落を囲む山々で育てられてきた杉。小楢より長い周期で育林され、集落の建物から古くは江戸の街に用いられてきました。石は集落の谷がゆっくり磨いてきた河原の小石。石灰を採取してきた武甲山の下流域に当たる、この地域の小さな特徴を示す石灰岩です。石灰石と燃料が豊富なこの地域の文献によれば、江戸の街へ供給された漆喰の材料となる消石灰も生産されていたようです。 When I trace the reasons why these materials exist in the scenery around me, I find myself drawn back into the past. The industries and ways of life revealed through this process have undergone immense change. While perhaps nothing remains truly static, a scenery that shifts according to cyclical rhythms offers a certain sense of reassurance—a comfort found in changes that fall within a predictable range. This is a piece of driftwood that was resting, sitting on a pebble in the shallow waters of the valley. 谷の浅瀬で小石に腰掛け、ひと休みしていた流木です。 My studio is located in a small valley. There is a forestry industry in the surrounding area. The river in the valley is a passageway for water and wind. The wind gently shakes the branches growing on both banks, causing the twigs to fall, and the ever-flowing water floats the fallen twigs and carries them away, slowly decomposing them. 私のスタジオは林業地にある谷あいの集落にあります。谷の川は水と風の通り道。風は両岸に育つ木々の枝をたゆやかに揺らして小枝を落とし、いつも流れている水は落ちてきた小枝を浮かせて運び、ゆっくりと分解していきます。 I don't know the whole thing, but I feel that the balance of the scenery in this area is created through the overlapping of large rhythms and small rhythms, mediated by water and wind. 大きなリズムと小さなリズムが重なり合って、水と風とを介しながら、この地域にある風景のバランスができているように感じています。 I wonder how many complex chains are behind this simple balance. The shallow river that flows through the village quickly swells as it collects mountain rain. It is said that when the water rose, they would build rafts from trees harvested from the mountains and float them to the city. There were several difficult spots where the raft could easily get stuck, and an agreement had been made with the village to help the raft in case it ran aground. There are still some songs from that era that are slightly mellow and carefree. 集落を流れる浅い川は、山の雨を集めてすぐに増水します。その増水に合わせて収穫した山の木で筏（いかだ）を組み、流して街へ運んでいたそうです。川には筏が引っかかりやすい難所がいくつかあり、座礁した際に助ける取り決めが流域の集落と結ばれていたとのこと。その時代のほんのり助平で呑気な歌が残されています。 Bamboo grass is resilient against such rising waters. Able to withstand the churning current, it grows in dense clusters along the banks, serving as a vital habitat for small flora and fauna. Pigeons—seemingly carefree yet knowledgeable—never overlook such spots. Then, when the rain falls, the valley stream gathers water from the mountains and transforms into a torrent capable of sweeping everything away. そんな増水に強いのが笹。攪拌に強い彼らは岸辺に群生し、小さな動植物の暮らす大切な場所にもなっています。呑気なようで物知りな鳩はそんな場所を見逃しません。そしてまた雨が降れば谷の川は山の水を集め、全てを流してしまうような急流に変わります。 The ceaseless flow of pebbles gradually alters the shape of the riverbank, creating shallows where rafts might snag or giving the advantage to bamboo grass. Some leaves fall only once a year, at a specific time, while others fall with every gust of wind. These loquat leaves follow the latter rhythm. 一年に一度、その時期に落ちてくる葉もあれば、風が吹く毎、その風に落ちてくる葉もあります。この枇杷の葉は後者のリズム。 Some trees are planted, cultivated for decades, and then harvested, while others are suddenly cut down and taken away. This cedar tree follows the former rhythm. 苗木を植えて数十年、地域で育てられて収穫される木もあれば、実生していたものを不意に切られて運ばれていく木もあります。 この杉は前者のリズム。 If I pay attention to the layered rhythms within the scenery, I’ll notice that a larger rhythm completes one cycle, while smaller rhythms complete three cycles in between. It's impossible to even measure if it's a cycle, but there's a sense that the magnificent rhythm is in motion. 風景の中で複層するリズムに目を向けると、大きなリズムが一周巡り、その間に小さなリズムが三周巡っていたりします。巡っているのかすら測れないけれど、大きなリズムが動いているような気配があります。 One day, the wind I saw on a mountain pass was large and slow, swaying the trees on the mountain in the distance like a slow motion. And the twigs above my head and the grass at my feet also swaying. When I crossed the pass and came out into the next town, yellow flowers were swaying slowly in the wind by the roadside of a single-track train station. ある日に山の峠で見た風は、大きくゆっくりとスローモションのように向こうの山の木々を揺らしていて、私の頭の上の小枝も、わたしの足元の草も風にそよいでいました。峠を越えて隣り町に出ると、単線の駅の道端で黄色い花が大きくゆっくりと風にそよいでいました。 One great wind gradually diminishes as it reaches various parts of the landscape. It seemed as if there were no boundaries, and the elements of the landscape were interconnected. I don't understand it well enough to express it in writing at all, but that's what it felt like. I must have been in that wind too. １つの大きな風は小さくなりながら風景の各所へと至ります。その様子には境界がないように思え、風景の要素が関連しあっているように思えました。全く書き表せていませんが、そういう事なのだと腹に落ちたのです。私もその風の中にいたはずです。 I feel the wind that day was the wind that connected the things I had previously known in fragments. These are fragments of old structures polished by the valley water and twigs dropped by the cherry trees planted along the riverbank. 谷の水が磨いた構造物の欠片と、川岸に植えられた桜が落とした小枝です。 In the mountainous area near Tokyo where my studio is located, villages are dotted along the river that runs through the valley. White Heron in love swaying in the wind 風にそよぐ恋する白鷺 I came across a very large colony of white herons. This is a decorative feather of a white heron that I found under the colony. I’m not just sitting here watching the leaves drift on ahead by because I’m tired. Each individuals grows in a different place, dropping twigs in their own rhythm, and I happen to pick them up and find them on my workbench. The reason why these short twigs met is because I can't throw away the ends of twigs and I've been collecting them. There are various reasons why they are small but have a good shape, or the bark is very beautiful. I also value the fact that, despite their delicate appearance, the branches are both supple and sturdy. The bamboo used to make fans is also cut down in the winter for the same reason. On the other hand, pruning of garden trees is often done in winter when the trees' vigor has subsided. I think it depends on the tree species, but it seems that branches that have grown too much in winter are cut off to give them the strength to sprout in spring. This is a twig from a *Konara* oak, featuring winter buds. Before the shift to petroleum-based energy, these trees were cultivated and harvested on short cycles, providing the firewood and charcoal that sustained daily life. The structural timber is Japanese cedar grown in the mountains surrounding this hamlet; cultivated over a longer cycle than the oak, it has been used for everything from local buildings to the city of Edo in times past. The stones are river pebbles, slowly polished by the valley stream. They are limestone—a material characteristic of this area, which lies downstream from Mount Buko, a source of lime extraction. Historical records indicate that this region, rich in both limestone and fuel, also produced the slaked lime used to make the plaster supplied to Edo. これは冬芽を持つ小楢（コナラ）の小枝。エネルギーの由来が石油に変わる以前は短い周期で育成と伐採が行われ、薪や炭となって暮らしを支えてきた樹木です。土台の木材はこの集落を囲む山々で育てられてきた杉。小楢より長い周期で育林され、集落の建物から古くは江戸の街に用いられてきました。石は集落の谷がゆっくり磨いてきた河原の小石。石灰を採取してきた武甲山の下流域に当たる、この地域の小さな特徴を示す石灰岩です。石灰石と燃料が豊富なこの地域の文献によれば、江戸の街へ供給された漆喰の材料となる消石灰も生産されていたようです。 When I trace the reasons why these materials exist in the scenery around me, I find myself drawn back into the past. There are many old concrete structures along the valley river, and I suspect some of them are the remains of simple bridges.
