As I gradually remove the thick bark of the pine branch, I can see traces of pruning or twigs that have been broken by the wind. Each individuals grows in a different place, dropping twigs in their own rhythm, and I happen to pick them up and find them on my workbench. The reason why these short twigs met is because I can't throw away the ends of twigs and I've been collecting them. There are various reasons why they are small but have a good shape, or the bark is very beautiful. In the mountainous area near Tokyo where my studio is located, villages are dotted along the river that runs through the valley. Our scenery is created by interweaving the trees grown in the mountains for forestry purposes, the garden trees of the villages, and the native plants along the river. 私のスタジオがある東京近郊の中山間地では、谷を流れる川に沿って集落が点在しています。山で林業として育てられる樹木を中心に、集落の庭木と川沿いの自生の植物が織り重なるようにして風景をつくり出しています。 ーーー Because Japanese andromeda is highly resilient to pruning, it is cultivated and trimmed in various locations throughout the village. These are twigs bearing winter buds, collected after the town’s maintenance pruning. I appreciate the plant for its many charms: the small white flowers of early spring, the lush green foliage of summer, and the brilliant red hues of autumn. I also value the fact that, despite their delicate appearance, the branches are both supple and sturdy. This is because trees absorb less moisture in winter than in summer, which makes it easier to transport and reduces the risk of mold growing during storage. The bamboo used to make fans is also cut down in the winter for the same reason. On the other hand, pruning of garden trees is often done in winter when the trees' vigor has subsided. I think it depends on the tree species, but it seems that branches that have grown too much in winter are cut off to give them the strength to sprout in spring. Exposed to rain and wind, some branches fall unexpectedly, while others are pruned systematically as part of town maintenance. Leaves dancing in the wind in the valley 谷の風に舞う木の葉 Rain that falls on the mountains makes trees grow, and water is collected in valleys and becomes rivers where fireflies live. The rising sun nurtures the fields of the village and expands the air as it hits the mountains, creating small winds. The leaves of the trees stretch their branches out to the water's surface in search of light, swaying in the breeze flowing through the valley. 山に降った雨は木々を育て、水は谷に集められ蛍の暮らす川になっています。登ってくる太陽は集落の畑を育て、山にあたって空気を膨張させて小さな風を作り出します。光を求めて水面へ枝を伸ばしていく木々の葉は、谷を流れる風にそよいでいます。 A single rod is added to the leaves that the tree sheds with its own rhythm to adjust the center of gravity and posture. This is a twig from a *Konara* oak, featuring winter buds. Before the shift to petroleum-based energy, these trees were cultivated and harvested on short cycles, providing the firewood and charcoal that sustained daily life. The structural timber is Japanese cedar grown in the mountains surrounding this hamlet; cultivated over a longer cycle than the oak, it has been used for everything from local buildings to the city of Edo in times past. The stones are river pebbles, slowly polished by the valley stream. They are limestone—a material characteristic of this area, which lies downstream from Mount Buko, a source of lime extraction. Historical records indicate that this region, rich in both limestone and fuel, also produced the slaked lime used to make the plaster supplied to Edo. これは冬芽を持つ小楢（コナラ）の小枝。エネルギーの由来が石油に変わる以前は短い周期で育成と伐採が行われ、薪や炭となって暮らしを支えてきた樹木です。土台の木材はこの集落を囲む山々で育てられてきた杉。小楢より長い周期で育林され、集落の建物から古くは江戸の街に用いられてきました。石は集落の谷がゆっくり磨いてきた河原の小石。石灰を採取してきた武甲山の下流域に当たる、この地域の小さな特徴を示す石灰岩です。石灰石と燃料が豊富なこの地域の文献によれば、江戸の街へ供給された漆喰の材料となる消石灰も生産されていたようです。 When I trace the reasons why these materials exist in the scenery around me, I find myself drawn back into the past. There are many old concrete structures along the valley river, and I suspect some of them are the remains of simple bridges. I built a bridge across the branches. 枝に一本の橋を渡し、佇まいを整えました。 Driven by the force of the rainwater gathered in the valley by the mountains during the rainy season, the nameless bridge had, as expected, been swept away. Like a raft moored in the shallows of the valley, it floats gently, tethered to a wire. 梅雨の山が谷に集めた水の力で、名前のない橋がやっぱり流されていました。谷の浅瀬に停留する筏（イカダ）のように、ワイヤーに繋がれゆったりと浮いています。 This bridge girder, waiting to be returned to its pier, seems to have a rhythm of its own. 集落に新しいカフェができるようです。以前からあった建物を修繕したり、新しい建物が建ったり。空き家が出てきたり、以前あったはずの何かがなくなっていたりする一方で、新しくこの地で暮らしが始まったり、集落へ通うようになったりしているようです。今は春、ドウダンツツジが満点の星空のように、小さな花を満開に咲かせています。 It looks like a new cafe is opening in our valley.
