The herons that used to catch fish in the shallow pebbled waters, perch in the treetops to catch the sun on chilly mornings, and stand watching the valley on snowy days, have now disappeared from their usual locations in the river.

小石の浅瀬で魚を捕り、冷えた朝には樹冠で陽を受け、雪の日も佇んで谷を見ていたいた鷺。彼らがいつもの川から居なくなりました。

They have met and are now forming a colony. In one large colony I know of, they have already begun busily preparing to raise their young in the trees. During this time, they spend less time near the river and more time in the trees. The process of building nests in the trees, warming eggs, and feeding the chicks begins with spring and continues into summer.

彼らは出会い、いまコロニーをつくっています。私が知る大きなコロニーでは、木の上で賑やかに子育ての仕度が始まりました。この時期は川の近くにいる時間が短くなり、木の上で過ごす時間が長くなっています。樹上に巣を作り、卵を温め、雛に食事を与える一連の作業が春とともに始まり夏を迎えていきます。

The white herons gather among the green cedars, creating an amazing scene that can only be seen at this time of year. They gather in the same place again this year, and I am happy to see the rhythm repeating itself. I think what supports this rhythm is the environment, with the trees in the same place as last year and the river flowing in the same place next year.

緑の杉に白い鷺が集まるその場所には、この時期にしかない驚くような風景があります。今年も同じ場所に集まって、繰り返していくリズムを嬉しく思っています。去年と同じ場所に木があり、来年も同じ場所に川が流れている環境がこのリズムを支えているのだと思います。
