This was left on the stump of an old cherry tree.
Cherry trees have been cut down here and there in various places, such as along rivers and in parks, and this is one of them. Many of the people I know (including wild birds_Hiyodori) love cherry blossoms. They care about cherry trees so much that they try not to even break the branches.

これは桜の老木の切り株に残っていたもの。
川沿いや公園など、いろいろな場所でぽつりぽつりと桜の木が切られているのですが、これはその１つです。私の身近な人の多くは（ヒヨドリも含めて）桜の花が好きです。枝も折らないようにするほど桜を大切に感じています。

Many cherry trees were planted in the mid-1900s, and many are now over 60 years old. The species of Somei-Yoshino used for planting them apparently tend to rot and fall once they reach 60 years of age. This appears to be the background behind the cutting down of cherry trees that we see in our neighborhood.
The scenery of cherry trees blooming along rivers has been around since I was born. But they did not occur naturally, they were planted and admired by people.

1900年代の中頃に多くの桜は植樹され、今では樹齢が60年を越すものが増えています。植樹に用いられたソメイヨシノという種は、樹齢が60年を超えると腐朽して倒木するものが増えてくるのだそうです。私の身近なところで見られる桜の伐採には、こうした背景があるようです。
川沿いに桜の咲く風景は、私が生まれた頃からあるものです。でもそれは自然に発生したものではなくて、人が植えて愛でてきたものでした。

New, small seedlings are often planted next to the stumps. The sight of old cherry trees and young seedlings is not beautiful in an orderly fashion, but it seems uneven and very healthy. This old tree, with the traces of a large chainsaw blade, has created the riverscape with cherry blossoms in our memories over the decades. That is why the young seedlings supported by the supports are carefully planted.

切り株の側には新しく小さな苗木が植えられていることが多くあります。桜の老木と若い苗木のある様子に整然と並ぶ美しさはありませんが、不均質で実に健全なように思えます。チェンソーの大きな刃の跡が残るこの老木は、数十年をかけて私たちの記憶に桜が咲く川の風景をつくりました。支柱に支えられた若い苗木が大切に植えられているのはそのためです。

As this great rhythm is repeated many times, it will mix with the memories of many people and become a thick culture. The deep chainsaw marks seem to represent the greatness of those who built the foundation, and it seemed fitting that the young branches were supporting them.

この大きなリズムが幾度も繰り返されていくと、より多くの人の記憶と混ざり合って分厚い文化になっていくのだろうと思います。チェンソーの深い跡が、礎を成した者の凄みのように思えてきて、それを若い枝が支持している様子が相応しいように思いました。
これはすぐそこにある、風にそよぐ川の風景です。
