The Irumagawa River flows near the studio. It descends the mountain and joins the Arakawa River, irrigating the Kanto Plain before heading out to Tokyo Bay. Once it leaves Tokyo Bay, it can travel the world by connecting with ocean currents. The upper reaches of the Irumagawa River are known as the Naguri River, and the valley is filled with the scenery of fireflies dancing. He was born and raised in such a scenery.

スタジオの近くを流れているのは入間川。山を下ると荒川と合流し、関東平野を潤し東京湾へ。東京湾を抜けると海流を乗り継いで世界中へ行くことができます。その入間川の上流域は特に名栗川と呼ばれ、渓谷に蛍の舞う風景が広がっています。彼はそんな風景の中で生まれ育ちました。

A large limestone rock near the bridge I always pass is constantly being polished by rain and river water. In that spot, which is shaded by trees in the afternoon, the slightly deeper water flows around the rock at a faster and slower pace. It is in such a place that the twig takes a rest, as he follows the valley from the mountains, on his journey.

私がいつも通る橋の近くにある大きな石灰岩は、雨と川の水に絶えず磨かれています。午後には木陰に入るその場所では、少し深い水が早さを変えながら岩を回り込むようにして流れていきます。山から谷を辿るように、旅に出た小枝の彼がひと休みするのはそんな場所です。

He might have seen heron standing on small rocks beside him, wisteria flowers cascading down the river depending on the season, or autumn leaves jutting out from both banks of the river. Along the way he would have missed the sudden summer rains and the swollen water.

小さな岩に立つ白鷺を横目に、季節によっては川に流れ落ちる藤の花や、両岸からせり出す紅葉した木々を眺めたかもしれません。途中では夏の急な雨を逃し、増水した水に乗り遅れたこともあったろうと思います。

When a twig leaning against a pebble in the valley starts to sway in the river water, I feel as if a large, continuous cycle is beginning to turn. This is both a complicated thing and a wonderful thing.

谷の小石にもたれていた小枝が、川の水に揺れ始めるとき、ひとつながりの大きな営みが回り始めるような気がします。これは厄介な事だし、素晴らしい事だと思っています。
