Trussed Keyaki swaying in the wind : Rotate_individual

In the mountainous area near Tokyo where my studio is located, villages are dotted along the river that runs through the valley. Our scenery is created by interweaving the trees grown in the mountains for forestry purposes, the garden trees of the villages, and the native plants along the river.

私のスタジオがある東京近郊の中山間地では、谷を流れる川に沿って集落が点在しています。山で林業として育てられる樹木を中心に、集落の庭木と川沿いの自生の植物が織り重なるようにして風景をつくり出しています。

This is a twig of a zelkova tree.
Zelkova trees, which grow large along the river, are an important element of the landscape representing the four seasons. Nothing makes a cool rustling sound like zelkova leaves in summer, and the gradations of color in autumn are beautiful. When winter comes and the leaves fall, the thin tips of the branches show a delicate sight as they disappear into the sky.

これはケヤキの小枝。
川沿いに大きく育つケヤキは四季を表す風景の重要な要素です。夏のケヤキほど涼しい葉音をたてるものはないように思いますし、秋の紅葉もグラデーションが美しい。冬になり葉を落とすと、細い枝先が空に消えていく繊細な姿を見せてくれます。

Down the river in the Kanto Plain, farmers have the custom of planting zelkova trees on the land to the north and letting them grow large. This is because zelkova lumber once sold for a high price. They were an asset, blocking winds from the north. Perhaps the zelkova trees that grow on the banks of rivers that run through valleys have a similar aspect. Perhaps they were an asset, grown large in preparation for the riverbanks being eroded by the valley water. We don't know the truth of this, but they do drop good twigs.

川を下った先にある関東平野では、農家が北側の土地に欅を植えて大きく育てる習慣があります。かつては欅の材木が高く売れたから。北からの風を遮ってくれる財産でした。谷を流れる川岸に育つ欅にも同じような側面があるのかもしれません。谷の水に岸が削られることに備えながら、大きく育てていた財産なのかもしれません。真相はわかりませんが、良い小枝を落としてくれます。

Beautiful twigs are often found in winter.
I thought that the occasional heavy snowfall and strong dry winter winds were responsible for breaking branches, but I realized that there was more to it than that.

素敵な小枝は冬に見つけることが多いものです。
時々降る重い雪や冬の乾いた強い風が枝を折ることに関係しているのですが、どうもそれだけではないことに気がづきました。

In the forestry industry, where trees are grown industrially, trees are cut down in the winter. This is because trees absorb less moisture in winter than in summer, which makes it easier to transport and reduces the risk of mold growing during storage. The bamboo used to make fans is also cut down in the winter for the same reason. On the other hand, pruning of garden trees is often done in winter when the trees' vigor has subsided. I think it depends on the tree species, but it seems that branches that have grown too much in winter are cut off to give them the strength to sprout in spring. Beautiful twigs are often found in winter, and there are several reasons why they are found in winter.

産業として木を育てる林業では、冬に木を伐採します。これは夏よりも冬の方が木が水分を吸い上げていないからのようで、運搬の重量を軽くし、保管時にカビなどが発生するリスクを下げる合理性があります。うちわ作りに使用する竹の伐採も同様の理由から冬に行われます。一方で庭木の剪定も、木の勢いがおさまっている冬に行われることが多くなっています。樹種にもよると思うのですが、冬に育ちすぎた枝を落とし春に芽吹く力を渡していくのだそうです。素敵な小枝は冬に見つけることが多いものなのですが、冬に見つける複数の理由がありました。

Using nature has been practiced since ancient times. I admire the sense of balance that combines the rhythms of plants with human convenience and utilizes them just right. I feel that what I should do before using it is to observe it. Increase the resolution of the landscape. Also look at the history of the area. When I get closer and pick it up, I feel like I can see the rich materials of the mountainous area.

自然を利用することは昔から行われてきたことです。植物のリズムと人間の都合を重ね合わせて、ちょうどよく利用するバランス感覚に憧れます。利用する前にすべきなのは観察することだと感じています。風景の解像度を高くし、地域の歴史にも目を向けながら近付いて手に取ってみると、中山間地の豊かな素材が見えてくる気がしています。
