This is a small twig of Akashide.
From the city of Edo to nearby towns, the cedar used for the foundations was the source of raw materials. The plaster used for the buildings was made from this limestone found in the rivers in the valley. And it seems that Akashide was used as firewood within the house. I'm interested in resources that can be obtained over a long period of time if I follow the rhythm.

これは赤四手の小枝。
江戸の街から近くの町まで、資材となってきたのは土台に使われている杉。その建物に使う漆喰は谷の川で見かけるこの石灰岩から作られていました。そして建物の中で、薪として用いられていたのがこのアカシデなのだそうです。リズムに従えば永く得られる資源に関心があります。

Recently, deer and bears have been appearing frequently in the area around my studio. There are also raccoons, which weren't around before. I often see foxes, and the other day I saw a bushy-tailed squirrel for the first time.

私のスタジオのある界隈では、最近よく鹿や熊が出ます。昔は居なかったはずのアライグマも。狐にもよく会うし、この間は尻尾がふさふさのリスに初めて会いました。川の胡桃を大きく半分に割って食べたのはきっと彼です。

Looking up at the sky, I see a kite and a crow having their usual quarrel, but a large hawk is chasing a turtledove with no regard for that. In spring, there are so many small birds that I can't really tell which one is whose.

空を見ると鳶とカラスがいつもの喧嘩をしていて、そんな事はお構いなしの勢いで大鷹が雉鳩を追いかけます。春になると小鳥が沢山いて、私にはどれが誰の声なのかよくわかりません。

Looking down at the river in the valley, we see white heron searching for prey, and river cormorants sunbathing as jadeites flash by like lightning. Watching it all is a grey heron perched in the tree crown, and a little upstream, a bear hawk is flying in the sky accompanied by many photographers.

谷の川に目を向けると白鷺が獲物を探していて、川鵜が戯けた姿で日光浴をしている横を稲妻のように翡翠が横ぎります。その全てを眺めているのは樹冠に佇む青鷺で、少し上流には多くのカメラマンを引き連れた熊鷹が舞っています。

There are mountains and valleys, rain and rivers, and so I am. Each has its own rhythm, and even though we haven't yet fully understood the mechanisms, I believe they all influence each other in a balanced way.

山があって谷があって、雨が降って川があって、そうこうして私がいます。各々はリズムを持っていて、まだ全てのメカニズムは解明されていなくとも、バランスのもとに相互に影響しあっているのだと思います。

If I don't know rhythm, there can be no balance, and if I lose balance, the rhythm will no longer repeat.

リズムを知らなければバランスなどあるはずもなくて、バランスを失ってはリズムは繰り返されなくなるわけで。見回して見ても、どこにも主従はなくて。

The scenery I'm in is framed by timber trees growing in the mountains and rivers in the valleys that polish the pebbles. Many things circulate there as the wind blows.

私のいる風景は、山で育てられる材木の木々と谷の川を骨格にしています。そこへ風が吹くたびに、多くのものが巡っています。

I hope that rhythm and balance will lead to harmony.

During the Edo period, rafts were built to carry lumber to the lumberyards near Tokyo Bay. I can see traces of this in the lumber from Fukagawa Lumberyard depicted by Hiroshige Utagawa. The reason the trees grow in the mountains around the studio is because they were cut down and then replanted. I believe there is a rhythm to an inexhaustible resource.
江戸期には筏を組んで材木を東京湾近くの木場まで流していたそうです。歌川広重の描いた深川木場の材木にその面影を見ています。スタジオ周辺の山に木が育っているのは、伐ったら植えてきたから。尽きない資源にはリズムがあるのだと思っています。
