Reaching the spring sky

The branches of this old plum tree have been repeatedly pruned.
This is done to achieve overall balance.

剪定を繰り返されてきた老梅の枝。
それは全体のバランスを目指してのこと。

Determined, I began scraping away at the hard bark, which was as cracked as a rock. Gradually, the hidden history of this branch began to emerge from the thick, intricate bark.

意を決して硬い木肌を目指し、私は岩のように割れた樹皮を削ってきました。入り組んで分厚くなった樹皮の先に少しずつ見えてきたのは、隠されていたこの枝の歴史でした。

It has endured countless winters of pruning and welcomed the spring of new growth. Hidden history suggests that the arrival of spring was not a smooth.
I am simply amazed that even with its core decaying, it was still sending out new branches that seemed to reach the spring sky.

幾度も剪定の冬を超え、芽吹きの春を迎えてきたのだと。それはすんなりと平穏に、何事もなく迎えてきた春ではないようで。芯が朽ちてなお、青天を衝くように新しい枝を伸ばしていた事に驚くばかりです。

I added a stroke to the missing branch, praising its spirit that seems to reach the clear spring sky.
私は失われていた枝に一筆を加え、春の青天を衝かんとする気概を讃えました。


Gentle movements reflect the weight of layered time.
Responding to even the slightest breeze is surely the wisdom gained from years of experience, seizing the opportune moment of spring.
That's what I understand, anyway.

わずかな風に応えるのは、さしずめ春の好機を逃さぬ年の功。

The old plum trees, which were pruned in winter, had the marks left on their trunks carefully protected, and they bloomed beautifully again this spring.
There, I find a balance woven from the rhythm of human life and the plum blossoms.

冬に剪定を行なった老梅は幹に残った跡を丁寧に保護され、今年の春も見事に咲いていました。そこには見事なバランスがあります。
