The neighboring Tonbi（Japanese kite） always rests on the telephone pole across the river.
Beyond the mountain pass lives a different Tonbi, and downstream, near the fields, lives yet another Tonbi.

隣人のとんびがいつも休んでいるのは川向こうの電信柱。
峠を越えた先には違うとんびが暮らしていて、下流の畑のあたりにはまた別のとんびが暮らしています。

In the small, open areas of land nestled in the mountains, there are settlements, each with its own small field to support their lives. It seems that the units in which humans live and the units in which Tonbi’s live are interconnected. They, too, have their own rules, and it appears they aren't allowed to fly just anywhere.

山間の小さくひらけた土地には集落があって、その暮らしに伴う小さな畑があります。人が暮らすそんな単位と、とんびの暮らす単位は連動しているように思えます。彼らにもルールがあって、どこへでも飛んで行って良いという訳ではないようで。

The sound of a Tonbi can usually be heard at the same situation. They're in the middle of a contest of strength with the usual crow, neither of them winning. Seeing them both resting on the same telephone pole makes me feel they have a relationship that others cannot understand.

とんびの声が聞こえるのは大体同じ時。いつものカラスと勝負のつかない力比べをしている最中です。疲れたのか飽きたのか、2人して同じ電柱で休んでいる所を見ると、複雑な関係なのだなと思えて来ます。

In autumn, the area is known for its hawk migration, attracting many visitors. While the OOTAKA （goshawks？?） we often see are beautiful, the most magnificent birds in this sky, spreading their wings wide and soaring gracefully, are the Tonbi. Catching the wind that sweeps across the valley, they circle slowly and elegantly, looking as if they are not burdened by the worries of everyday life.

秋になると鷹の渡りが行われ、観察者が多く訪れるのもこの地域の特徴です。日頃見かけるオオタカもとても美しいのですが、この空で１番立派な翼を広げ悠々と舞うのはとんび。谷を駆ける風を捉え、ゆっくりと旋回する姿は本当に優雅で、日々の暮らしの悩みを抱えているとは全く思えません。

The Tonbi, a large bird of prey, is said to be increasing in number in Japan.
Seeing them resting alongside smaller birds, it almost seems as if they are transcending the harsh laws of nature. There is a Japanese proverb that says, "A skilled hawk hides its talons.", and I think the Tonbi is the perfect example of a skilled bird of prey that hides its talons.

大型の猛禽類にあって個体数を増やしていると言われるとんび。小鳥と相席して休んでいる姿を見ると、厳しい自然の掟を超越しているようにも見えてきます。「能ある鷹は爪を隠す」と言われますが、爪を隠している能ある猛禽類とは、とんびの事なのではないかと思っています。

This is important though, for the sake of the nuance of the sound and to convey a sense of familiarity, please allow me to call it "tonbi" for now. Historically, the name that has been used for a long time is "tobi" (鳶). Thanks in advance, with my respect.
あのよ、「とんび」ぢゃねんだ、「とび」なんだよ。と山向こうの町に暮らす老師匠が揚々と教えてくださったのですが、音のニュアンスと親しみを込めまして、ここはひとつ「とんび」と呼ばせてください。歴史的に長らく使われてきた呼び方は「鳶_とび」でございます。
