Throughout the winter, I've admired the magnificent wisteria vines along the river flowing through the valley.

冬の間、谷を流れる川沿いで、すごいものだなと眺めてきた山藤の蔓。

Once the flowers bloom in spring, I won't pay any attention to the vines, and once the leaves grow thick, I can no longer see the vines that are many layers away. There is a special pleasure in observing the vines of the mountain wisteria in the rhythm of winter.

春に花が咲いてしまえば蔓になど目は向かず、葉が繁ってくれば幾重も向こうにある蔓はもう見えません。山藤の蔓には、冬のリズムで観察する季節の醍醐味があります。

Once the wisteria vines have finished blooming, they suddenly gain momentum.
Some vines entwine around bamboo, and it almost seems as if they are struggling against the unruly growth of the bamboo, which has become beyond their control.(In various parts of Japan, there are problems arising from the fact that bamboo groves, once used for industrial purposes, are no longer being managed.)

ひとたび花を咲かせ終えると、急に勢いを増す山藤の蔓。
あるものは竹に絡まり、管理の届かなくなった竹の無鉄砲な展開とせめぎ合っているようにも見えてきます。山藤の破竹の勢い、などと書かせていただきたいところなのですが、英語で書く際の言語力不足の壁が立ちはだかります。

This year, too, the mountain wisteria, in full bloom and distributing its nectar, attracts wild birds and bees. The sight of the flowers blooming like a waterfall, heading towards the river in the sun-drenched valley, is truly impressive. Together with the wisteria planted in the gardens of the villagers, the mountain wisteria blurs the boundaries of our scenery.

今年も花を咲かせて蜜を配る山藤には、野鳥や蜂が集まってきます。光の溢れる谷の川へ向かい、滝のように咲く姿は見応えがあります。集落の庭先に植えられた藤と相待って、風景の境界を滲ませていく山藤。

This is a glimpse into their search for the next spring, something not visible during the vibrant season.

華やかな季節には見えていなかった、これは彼らが次の春を探す姿です。

I hope that rhythm and balance will lead to harmony.
