I don't know what they were up to during the winter, but the sound of pheasants can be heard in the spring. It's near the plum trees at the foot of the mountain, in a village where a stream flows.

冬の間どうしていたのかわからないけれど、春になると聞こえてくる雉の声。それは小川の流れる集落の、山裾にある梅の木あたりの事です。

The plum branches, pruned in winter and on their way back to the fields, seem just right for pheasants to gaze out over the half-dormant farmland.

冬に剪定されて畑に還る途中の梅の枝は、半分休んでいる農地を見渡す雉にちょうど良いのだろうと思えてきます。

This is the edge of a village where pheasants claim their territory, and It is slightly within human reach. Deer and wild boar, raccoon and me, fox and bear appear here, creating a scenery with blurred boundaries. As summer approaches and the plants and trees grow lush, those boundaries become even more vague. It's probably based on its own unique balance.

ここは雉が縄張りを主張していて、人の手がわずかに届いている集落の端。鹿も猪も、狸も人も、狐も熊も出てくる、境界が曖昧な風景です。草木のしげる夏にかけて、その境界は固有のバランスに基づいて、ますます滲んでいくように思えます。
