When the scenery comes alive amidst the rhythm of the changing seasons, the various layered rhythms seem to resonate with one another. A single breeze sweeps across without boundaries, swaying diverse species indiscriminately; the resulting changes propagate and converge elsewhere, guided by the unique balance inherent to the region.

巡る四季のリズムの中で風景が華やぐとき、複層しているそれぞれのリズムが共振しているように感じます。ひとつの風は境界なく行き渡り、隔てなく多様な種を揺らします。その変化は土地が持つ固有のバランスに基づいて他方へ伝わり、収束します。

These five specimens are from the area where I live. From the left, they are mulberry, cherry, bamboo, lily, and zelkova. The mulberry and bamboo serve as gateways to stories connecting to the industries of the past, while the cherry, lily, and zelkova play a major role in conveying the changing seasons.

この5本は私のいる地域の標本です。画面の左から桑 、桜、竹、百合、欅。桑や竹は過去の産業へとつながる物語への入り口。桜、百合、欅は四季の変化を伝える大きな役割を持っています。

Mulberry trees are a remnant of the silk industry that once sustained Japan. Many wild mulberry trees grow downstream from my studio; their fruit offers a seasonal treat enjoyed by small birds, my daughter, and myself.

桑はかつての日本支えた絹産業の名残り。スタジオの少し下流には野生化した桑が多く育っており、その実は小鳥と私と娘の旬の味覚になっています。

Before the advent of plastic, bamboo was used to make a wide array of everyday tools. While it grows rapidly and is a renewable resource, a serious issue has arisen: wild boars eating the bamboo shoots are unable to keep the plant's vigorous spread in check.

竹はプラスチックが登場する以前、多くの生活道具に使用されてきました。成長が早く循環力がありますが、猪が筍を食べるだけではその勢いを管理することはできないという深刻な問題も生じています。

Cherry blossoms and lilies mark the seasons of spring and summer, respectively. It is the cherry blossoms along the riverbank that usher in spring after winter. Meanwhile, the lily—cleverly positioning itself in the shade—dispels the clouds of the rainy season and invites the strong summer sun.

桜と百合はそれぞれ春と夏の季節を担当しています。冬を春にしてくれているのは川辺に咲く桜の花。梅雨の雲を払い強い夏の日差しをくれるのは、ちゃっかり自分は木陰にいる百合の花。

The zelkova tree cycles through autumn colors, leaf fall, and fresh green foliage, lending a sense of atmosphere to the valley’s banks throughout the year. Indeed, the spring cherry blossoms appear all the more magnificent precisely because the zelkova’s slender branches have created such a serene scenery during the winter months.

欅は紅葉、落葉、青葉と巡り、一年を通して谷の岸辺に風情をもたらします。春の桜が一層見事なのは、冬の間に欅の細い枝が静かな風景を演出してきたからに他なりません。

There is a repeating and layered rhythm here, and a continuous balance. I feel there is value in moments of beautiful, resonant scenery. I want to expand the atmosphere into the space.

ここには繰り返しながら複層するリズムがあり、連なるバランスがあるように思います。美しく共振する風景の瞬間には、価値があると感じています。

I hope that rhythm and balance will lead to harmony.
