This is a twig from a *Konara* oak, featuring winter buds. Before the shift to petroleum-based energy, these trees were cultivated and harvested on short cycles, providing the firewood and charcoal that sustained daily life. The structural timber is Japanese cedar grown in the mountains surrounding this hamlet; cultivated over a longer cycle than the oak, it has been used for everything from local buildings to the city of Edo in times past. The stones are river pebbles, slowly polished by the valley stream. They are limestone—a material characteristic of this area, which lies downstream from Mount Buko, a source of lime extraction. Historical records indicate that this region, rich in both limestone and fuel, also produced the slaked lime used to make the plaster supplied to Edo.

これは冬芽を持つ小楢（コナラ）の小枝。エネルギーの由来が石油に変わる以前は短い周期で育成と伐採が行われ、薪や炭となって暮らしを支えてきた樹木です。土台の木材はこの集落を囲む山々で育てられてきた杉。小楢より長い周期で育林され、集落の建物から古くは江戸の街に用いられてきました。石は集落の谷がゆっくり磨いてきた河原の小石。石灰を採取してきた武甲山の下流域に当たる、この地域の小さな特徴を示す石灰岩です。石灰石と燃料が豊富なこの地域の文献によれば、江戸の街へ供給された漆喰の材料となる消石灰も生産されていたようです。

While perhaps nothing remains truly static, a scenery that shifts in a cyclical rhythm offers a sense of reassurance—a comfort found in changes that fall within the realm of the predictable. Conversely, if the pace of change in industry and lifestyle is too rapid, one feels a sense of melancholy; if it is too slow, one grows anxious at the risk of decline.

これらの素材が私がいる風景の中に存在する理由を調べていくと、いつの間にか過去に遡っていきます。そこから見えてくる産業や暮らし方の様子は大きく変わりました。変わらないものなどないのかもしれませんが、周期的なリズムで変化する風景は予測できる範囲の変化が持つ安堵のようなものを持っています。一方で産業や暮らし方が持つ変化のリズムが速すぎると寂しさを感じ、その変化が遅すぎれば衰退しかねないと不安を覚えたりします。

When I trace the reasons why these materials exist in the scenery around me, I find myself drawn back into the past. The industries and ways of life revealed through this process have undergone immense change. While perhaps nothing remains truly static, a scenery that shifts according to cyclical rhythms offers a certain sense of reassurance—a comfort found in changes that fall within a predictable range. Conversely, I feel a sense of melancholy when the pace of change in industry and lifestyle is too rapid, yet I also feel anxious that stagnation—or even decline—might set in if that change is too slow.

この個体が風にそよぐ姿には、一定のようでいて均質ではないリズムがあります。そこには均衡があって、予想できる安堵があります。だからこそ、不意の風を待つ自分がいたりするのかもしれないなと思っています。

There is a rhythm to the way this individual sways in the breeze—one that seems steady, yet is not uniform. It holds a sense of balance and offers a reassuring predictability. Perhaps that is precisely why I find myself waiting for an unexpected gust of wind.

I hope that rhythm and balance will lead to harmony.
