hey have played a significant role since the ancient days of the *Kojiki* and feature as major characters in folktales passed down through generations. They are the pheasants.

大昔の古事記の頃から役割を得ていて、多くの人が語り継いできた民話にも主演クラスで出演している彼らは雉。

Whether it’s summer, autumn or winter, I have absolutely no idea where they are, but they’re definitely there, and come spring they start calling out loudly.

夏も秋も冬も、どこにいるのか全くわからないけれど、彼らは確かに居て、春になると大きな声で鳴き始めます。

The pheasant appears in myths and folktales, yet its presence is felt in our scenery as well. It makes its rounds to assert its territory in the fields, slips into the thickets along the riverbank, and—while raising its young again this year—lets the valley breeze sway its tail feathers.

神話や民話の中にも居るけれど、身近な場所にも気配を残している雉。縄張りを主張する畑をちょっと見回って、河原の藪に入っていって、今年も子育てしながら谷の風に尾羽を揺らすのです。
