Around the time when I start to feel I've fully enjoyed the winter chill, the wintersweet arrives—carrying a sweet fragrance on the cold breeze to herald the approach of spring.

冬の寒さはもう充分に楽しんだよと思い始める頃、冷たい風に甘い香りをのせて、春が近い事を告げてくれるのは蝋梅。

Spring arrived in stages again this year. First, the sasanqua camellias bloomed, followed by these wintersweet, then the plum blossoms, and finally the mountain wisteria. During the flowerless rainy season, no one sees the wintersweet, but as they grow lush and green, they are steadily preparing to bloom in winter.

今年も春は段階を経て訪れました。山茶花が咲いてこの蝋梅が咲き、梅が続いて山藤の花へ。梅雨の蝋梅を見る人は誰もいないけれど、青々と繁る彼らは着々と冬に咲く支度を進めています。

It begins to feel as though this season of lush foliage is part of a recurring sequence leading back to that spring. When observing the layered rhythms within our scenery, the beginning seems quite indistinct, and the end, too, feels somewhat ambiguous. As I gaze at a motionless twig, begins to seem indistinct and ambiguous.

葉の繁るこの季節が、繰り返されるあの春へのシークエンスなのだろうと思えてきます。風景の中に複層するリズムを眺めると、始まりはとても不明瞭で、終わりもなんだか曖昧です。静止する小枝を見ていると、これも不明瞭で曖昧だなと思えて来ます。

I hope that rhythm and balance will lead to harmony.
