I’m not just sitting here watching the leaves drift on ahead by because I’m tired. I was blown out into the open by the wind just before the evening shower, tumbled down into the valley, and floated down the river—and now I’m having a little chat with a pebble I happened to get caught on.

先に流れていく葉っぱをここで眺めているのは、疲れたからって訳じゃなく。夕立前の風に吹かれて飛び出して、谷に転げて川を流れ、たまたま引っかかった小石と少し話しているのです。

There are things I can choose and things I can’t, but this little pebble, which has been sitting here quietly watching the valley, is a good listener. It listens quietly to the stories of a drifter like me.

選べる事や選べない事があるけれど、ここでじっと谷を見てきた小石は聞き上手。流れ者の私の話を小石は静かに聞いています。

If another summer shower comes, I’ll hurry on my way, while the pebble gazes at the scenery from the same vantage point. And I imagine that as it listens to the scattered stories told by whoever comes next, the pebble will piece them all together.

また夕立が来れば私は先を急ぎ、小石は同じ視点で風景を眺めます。そしてまた次の誰かが話す散り散りの話を聞いて、小石はそれを繋ぎ合わせていくのだろうと思います。

During this season, when sudden rains cause the water level to rise, this is generally what I saw in the fleeting shallows of the valley stream. Perhaps the reason each pebble has its own unique character is thanks to the leaves carried along by the current.

突然の雨で水嵩を増すこの季節、谷の川のつかの間の浅瀬で見たのは、おおむねこの様な具合でした。小石がそれぞれ個性的なのは、ひょっとすると流れてくる葉っぱのおかげなのかもしれません。
