The egrets that had gathered in the familiar treetops since spring to raise their young have gradually returned to the valley. They built their nests at the very tops of the trees and laid their eggs; I hope all has gone well for them.

春からいつもの樹冠に集まって子育てをしていた白鷺が、いつもの谷に少しずつ戻ってきました。木のてっぺんに巣を作って卵を産んで。うまくいったことを願います。

The people who came to play in the water have returned to the city as usual, and by the time the valley’s foliage turns to autumn colors, many egrets will have come back. There, they will greet the winter morning sun from their customary perches.

水遊びにやってきていた人々がいつものとおり街へ戻り、谷が紅葉する頃には多くの鷺がこの谷に戻ります。そして冬の朝陽をいつもの止まり木で迎えるのです。

It looks like the same familiar rhythm as last year will play out again this year.
And I sense that next year, too, will surely follow that same rhythm—one that could even be described as uniform.

去年と同じ、いつものリズムが今年も刻まれそうです。
そして私は来年もきっとおおよそ同じ、均質とも言えるリズムがあるのだろうと感じています。

The states of equilibrium generating these repetitive rhythms vary in depth. The greater the depth, the more subtle and uniform the changes; the shallower the depth, the more swift and uncertain they become. A deep equilibrium may offer the reassurance of uniform repetition, while a shallow equilibrium satisfies the anticipation of the unexpected.

ここで繰り返しのリズムを生み出している均衡状態には、それぞれ深度の違いがあります。その深度が深いほど変化は小さく均質なものとなり、その深度が浅いほど変化は俊敏に不確かなものになります。深い均衡は均質に繰り返される安心を与え、浅い均衡は不意が訪れることへの期待を満たしてくれているのかもしれません。

A state of balance is not an absolute point of convergence, but rather something expansive that can encompass varying depths. It also makes me wonder if rhythm and balance might not actually be separate things.

バランスが取れた状態は絶対的な収束点ではなくて、多様な深度を持ちうるおおらかなものです。そしてリズムとバランスは別々のものではないのだろうと思ったりしています。

I hope that rhythm and balance will lead to harmony.
