I do not know where they spend the winter, but come spring, the call of the pheasant can be heard. It comes from the area around the plum trees at the foot of the mountain, in a hamlet where a stream flows. By autumn, the pheasant's call has completely vanished, and there is no telling where they raise their young.

冬の間どうしているのかわからないけれど、春になると聞こえてくる雉の声。
それは小川の流れる集落の、山裾にある梅の木あたりの事です。秋になる頃にはすっかり雉の声は消えていて、どこで子育てしているのかもわかりません。

The pheasant, which dwells in myths and folktales, appears within our scenery of reality according to its own unique rhythm.

神話や民話の中に居る雉は、彼らのリズムに従って現実の風景に現れます。

This is the edge of a village where pheasants claim their territory in spring.
Deer and wild boar, raccoon and me, fox and bear appear here, creating a scenery with blurred boundaries.As winter settles in and the vegetation falls quiet, the pheasants no longer assert their territories.

ここは春に雉が縄張りを主張していた集落の端。
鹿も猪も、狸も人も、狐も熊も出てくる境界が曖昧な風景です。
草木の静まる冬にかけては、雉は縄張りを主張しません。

This is the edge of the village, where human attention reaches only faintly.
Perhaps even the boundaries between people, as recorded at the Legal Affairs Bureau, are somewhat ambiguous here.

ここは人の関心がわずかに届いている集落の端。
法務局にある人間同士の境界線ですら、ちょっと曖昧なのかもしれません。

I imagine it is the valley wind—crossing the hazy boundary—that stirs the feathers of the pheasant as it surveys its surroundings from a small plum branch.

梅の小枝で周囲を見渡す雉の羽根を揺らすのは、曖昧な境界を横断する谷の風なのだろうと思います。
