Once again this year, various lily flowers bloomed one after another, starting in early summer. I trace the sequence of their blooming rhythm—from early to late summer—recalling just where they appear each year.

今年も初夏から順を追って、様々な百合の花が次々と開きました。毎年この辺りに咲くのだよなと、初夏から晩夏へと続いて咲く百合のリズムを追います。

While some lilies may vanish during the autumn brush-clearing, they never disappear entirely. It seems to me that there is a unique balance between life in these mountain hamlets—where, without regular clearing, the landscape would be swallowed by the encroaching wilderness—and the lilies that grow along the roadside.

秋の草刈りでいつの間にか消えている百合もあるけれど、百合がなくなることはありません。草刈りをしなければ山に飲み込まれてしまう山間の集落での暮らしと、その道端の百合は固有のバランスを持っているように思います。

Once the seasons have run their full cycle, they entrust countless seeds to the wind, leaving behind nothing but a single, spent flower stalk. I admire their design, which allows them to discard spent flowers every year without any penalties.

季節が一回巡ると、彼らは数えきれないほどの種を風に預け、一本の花殻を私に残します。なんの咎めもなく、花殻を毎年使い捨てる彼らのデザインに私は憧れます。

If I were to ensure that the lilies along the mountain pass I frequent are not cut down during the autumn clearing, I suspect something remarkable might happen—perhaps the pass would become a place where lilies bloom in abundance. Yet, such a change would surely attract wild boars, and I imagine fields would not remain unscathed.
One action leads to another; I suppose there is a balance at play here, too.

もし、私がいつも通るあの峠の百合を秋の草刈りで切らないようにしたら、きっとすごいことが起きるのではないかといつも空想します。ヤマユリ、ウバユリ、タカサゴユリが咲き連なる峠になるかもしれません。しかしそうなると猪もきっと来ます。畑も無事では済まないのだろうと思います。一つの行為が他方へ連なる、ここにもバランスがあるのだろうと思います。

I hope that rhythm and balance will lead to harmony.
