If you cross the mountain from the valley where my studio is located, you will find a YUZU-producing area. It is said to be one of the regions in Japan where YUZU has been cultivated for the longest time. (YUZU is like a fragrant lemon, and I think that you have become an adult when you can enjoy YUZU. It's quite personal)

私のスタジオがある谷から山を越えるとそこは柚子の産地です。日本で最も古くから柚子を栽培してきた地域の一つなのだそうです。

YUZU is sometimes planted in houses in villages, or growing wild on river cliffs. Plants, which have a long relationship with people, are integrated into daily life and create local scenery according to their cyclical rhythms. In the past, taxation on fruit trees was done by having officials visually inspect the trees. Off the main road, on the edge of the mountain where lumber is grown, yuzu trees are planted in small alleys. This is what gives the region's scenery its flavor.

柚子は集落の民家に植えられていたり、川の崖でワイルドに育っていたりします。人と長い関わりを持つ植物は暮らしの中に溶け込んでいて、循環するリズムに則って地域の風景を作り出しています。かつては果樹への課税が役人の目視によって行われていたそうです。大きな通りから外れたところ、材木を育てる山の際の、小さな路地のその先にも、柚子は点々と植えられています。それがこの地域の風景が持つ薬味となっています。

There is a big difference between looking at a landscape from a distance and holding it in your hand to see the details. There are so many thorns on the branches! I didn't know.
Local YUZU has a high aroma content, so when the branches were cut, they also emitted a pleasant aroma. Is it the same for lemon branches from Sicily, Italy? The YUZU trees that have been cultivated for generations continue to flow into the area.
Yuzu is swaying in the wind today as well.

遠くから風景として見ることと、手にとってディテールを見るのとでは大きな違いがあります。こんなに枝に棘があったなんて！私は知りませんでした。地域の柚子は香り成分が高いのですが、枝を切るとそこからも良い香りがしました。何世代にも渡り育てられてきた柚子は、地域に溢れ出しながら今日も風にそよいでいます。
